The mountain road meandered down to the valley. The horses ran wild in the fenced pasture of grass, wildflowers, and a babbling brook coming down from the hill. Hence, it fed into the pond where breams, near the shore, were hitting the mayflies skimming atop the water. Uncle George in his overalls slopping the pigs, and daddy chopping wood near the smokehouse. Daddy, who went by the name Aaron, had gone hunting early that morning. Strips of squirrel and rabbit hanging on the rack dehydrating ever so slowly. The rest of the kill was for dumplings and stew.
Bessie and her two girls, Mae, and Darlene rode in their ‘horse and buggy’ down the mountain road and stopped in front of the farmhouse. Momma, who everyone called Mary Louise, with an apron on and dishtowel over her shoulder came out the screen door to greet them. Sitting near, one of the busier intersections, as the small town is becoming more populated, serving five cents for a paper cup full.
How things changed from that time and bibles became fancier and pricier. Those young lemonades stand entrepreneurs became more knowledgeable and business competitive. The main goal was to find out who could make the most money and advertise better. Capitalism exploded and grew quickly, thus dispersing families and neighbors into stricter social structures. Crime and greed took over, which made neighborliness less affluent.
Couples that meet through family and friends now meet through dating sites or singles groups. Simple became complicated, and old-fashioned ways and people, of older generations, now die more often. Children are born recently into a world where the older folks are vanishing and newer technologically advanced worlds emerging.
Mountain roads have become paved routes for electric vehicles; farmhouses give way to solar panel farms and wind turbines. Bookstores are decreasing while database warehouses have information not yet explored but briefly. Poultry and cattle go through slaughter in factories as products for retail groceries.
Mom and pop stores are closing and online shopping and businesses are booming. The entire world is getting compartmentalized, and now entertained, hedonistically. A big commercial we live in. The big picture is now a huge neon sign starting to flicker.
